Auditing Windows Systems

Recently during the setup of a SharePoint Project Server setup, the setup involved more than one IIS server.  One for the projects, and one for the reports (reporting doesn’t do clusters).

After setting this up, we could access all the sets without issue while directly on the reporting server.  Access the WSS Project Server website is also without issue from both the server and any workstation.  however, when we try to run a report (which calls up IIS on the ‘other’ server) the dreaded three login strikes and you are 401.1′d happens.

To better isolate where the authentication is failing.  There are two things to do.

a) check the IIS logs

b) enable some auditing on the folder directories

To enable auditing on access to particular files/folders:

On the machine the files reside, start gpedit.msc

gpedit01

enable the settings as above.  Warning, if you enable process tracking – never ever do that on a production machine!  Well, do so at your own peril.  It is a resource hog.  Also, make sure your event logs are going to have adequate space for the additional auditing.  Our concern here is going to be the failure audits.

Next we go to the specific folder we want to watch/audit.  By default, this will apply to all subfolders and files, though u can choose to monitor just that chosen folder or file.

FolderAuditSetup01

Go to the properties of the folder/file and navigate to the Security Tab.

FolderProperties03

You can now choose the Audit tab.  From here, you have to add each individual user and group for which to monitor.  If a user which is either outside of the group, or is not added, then no audit entry will take place.

AuditFolderSetup04

FolderAddOwner05

Auditing will take place indefinitely at this point.  So if you are doing this solely for troubleshooting.  Remove the users from here, and reconfigure the above gpedit.msc when you have finished.

Also, remember that if you are monitoring across multiple servers, this will need to be done on each machine.  Also, getting familiar with Network Monitor 3.1 will be very helpful!

All of the above setup auditing will appear in your Windows Event Viewer Security Log.  You should be able to correlate this either with other systems, AD, or events in the Application or System logs.

Enterprise Search Overview Lab1

I’ve done this lab before, but I’m now revisiting it with a few months MOSS 2007 experience under my belt.

The lab went over deskto search on both XP and Vista, which was a good intro for everyday users.  The MOSS search was much more helpful this time, after having some day-to-day exposure to MOSS search.  If you’re very tech-savvy, u should consider skipping the first two labs, or showing day-to-day office users the first two modules of this lab.

I’m working on a solution to this -

So far this is a good amount of information:  http://kintespace.com/rasxlog/?p=1551

About that GBPUSD Long…

Yeah that didn’t pan out so well.  I seem to have a habit of getting in right before a break, but not choosing the correct direction!

A new direction has been needed, and one has been found.  Enter trading method double-confirmation.

My broker of choice now provide a sort of heartbeat system, which they constantly update with trades some of their selected brokers make based on systems (which they don’t share).  Each time a trade is entered or becomes favorable (there are about 6 different trading systems) I get a nice little alarm to confirm with my chart.  From what I gather, these are almost solely technical.  Which is why I still confirm with my own charts (on the 15 and 4 hour timeframes) and the daily news to watch out for.  I only wish I did this on the back of the recent JPY news, it could’ve saved me about 80 pips in one day!

So… without further ado, I post my trades next.  The indicators I use are MACD, Stochastics, SMA, EMA, and Bollinger Bands.  I intend to do this once or twice a week.  I have a psychological habit of going quiet and into withdrawl when the trading goes poorly a couple days in a row.
